Elephant Kingdom operates under the Zoological Park Organization , which is directly under Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment. It was established on 29 November 2009 under the royal initiative of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit, the Queen Mother. Recognizing that elephants are a national symbol of Thailand, Her Majesty emphasized the importance of conserving and caring for Thai elephants to ensure their well-being and survival. To fulfill this vision, Elephant Kingdom leases approximately 3,000 rai of land from the Royal Forest Department through the Forest Industry Organization. The site is located within the Dong Phodin National Forest reserve in Krapho Sub-district, Tha Tum District, Surin Province. This land is dedicated to the care and conservation of elephants. Elephant Kingdom is currently home to the largest number of captive elephants in the world. Presently, over 200 elephants are part of the Elephant Kingdom or the “Bring Elephants Back to Their Home” project. Under this initiative, mahouts (elephant caretakers and trainers) are encouraged to raise elephants at home, which supports the preservation of their unique culture and ensures better care and welfare for the elephants. To promote sustainable management, the area is divided to support both elephants and their caretakers. Each elephant is allocated 4 rai of land for planting food, while each mahout family receives 2 rai to build a home. Currently, around 70–80 mahout families reside within the area. Additionally, elephant food , Napier grass , is distributed three times per week to support elephants’s health and nutrition. In case an elephant becomes ill or injured, veterinary services are offered at no cost to support its treatment and recovery.
