Phu Pha Thoep National Park is the 59th national park of Thailand, located approximately 17 kilometers from Mueang Mukdahan District. Visitors can reach the park via Highway No. 2034 (Mukdahan - Don Tan route). The park is renowned for its unique geological formations and serves as a significant natural tourist attraction. It features an 8-stop nature trail, each offering a distinctive experience: 1. Phu Pha Thoep Rock Formation – A stunning natural rock sculpture shaped by time, estimated to be 120-95 million years old. 2. Mudchalin Stone Field – A vast rock plateau stretching about 1.2 kilometers. At the end of the rainy season, the area blooms with beautiful wildflowers. 3. Wang Duean Ha Waterfall – A small waterfall nestled in lush forest, located near the Phu Pha Thoep rock formations. 4. Camel Cliff (Pha Oot) – A west-facing viewpoint featuring a rock that resembles a desert camel. This spot is perfect for watching the sunset. 5. Pha Ngoy – An east-facing viewpoint with towering cliffs and a rock shaped like a turtle. It is an ideal spot for sunrise viewing. 6. Phu Tham Phra Waterfall – A 20-30 meter-high cliff, which transforms into a waterfall during the rainy season. At the top, a Buddha image is enshrined. 7. Pha Manao – A high cliff atop a mountain with unique geological features, making it a great spot for learning about rock formations. During the rainy season, Pha Manao Waterfall can be seen here. 8. Pha Sai – A southern viewpoint overlooking the Mekong River, which forms a natural border between Thailand and Laos. Along the trail leading down from Pha Sai, visitors will encounter Tham Lod, a narrow 30-meter-long passageway formed by leaning rock formations, which leads back to the national park headquarters. Additionally, there is another tourist attraction located at Phu Pha Thoep National Park Ranger Station 1 (Huai Sing)—Red Handprint Cave. This cave is 3 meters wide and 60 meters long, featuring ancient red handprint paintings on its walls. These handprints are believed to be a form of communication used by prehistoric humans and are estimated to be around 3,000 years old.
