The Terracotta Garden at Lamphun (Suan Mai Thai Ban Por Liang Muen) Located in Lamphun Province, The Terracotta Garden at Lamphun was founded by Mr. Suthiphong Maiwan, also known as Sala Daeng, a man deeply passionate about terracotta art. With unwavering love and dedication to the craft, he has devoted over 50 years of his life to studying, experimenting, and creating terracotta sculptures. Driven by his passion for terracotta art, he set out to preserve the wisdom of ancient pottery-making by crafting pieces that reflect the essence of various artistic styles, including: • Khmer Art, distinguished by intricate patterns and powerful architectural forms. • Dvaravati Art, characterized by graceful lines and a deep reflection of Buddhist faith. • Hariphunchai Art, unique to the ancient Lanna Kingdom, showcasing delicate details that embody the rich cultural heritage of Lamphun. One of the key reasons Sala Daeng established this open-air terracotta sculpture garden was his vision to create a tourist attraction that would draw visitors to Lamphun. He firmly believed that art serves as a bridge, connecting people to the culture and history of the region. Moreover, Sala Daeng has always emphasized that “no sculpture I create will ever be complete without the clay from Lamphun.” He considers Lamphun’s clay to be the most suitable material for crafting terracotta works, making it the heart and soul of every piece he creates. With this philosophy, The Terracotta Garden at Lamphun has become not only a showcase of exquisite terracotta artistry but also a cultural hub that promotes tourism and supports the local economy. The garden serves as an open-air museum, filled with invaluable sculptures and architectural masterpieces, set amidst a lush and serene landscape—ideal for both relaxation and artistic exploration.
