Baan Laem: A Small Community with a Unique Way of Life Baan Laem is a small community located in Tha Sala Subdistrict, Tha Sala District, Nakhon Si Thammarat Province, where over 90% of the residents are Muslim. The primary occupation of the locals is small-scale fishing, evident from the numerous small fishing boats docked along the shores throughout the village. Additionally, some residents engage in trading and general labor within the area. What makes Baan Laem intriguing is the way of life that is deeply intertwined with their occupations, which visitors can observe in daily activities. This way of life has evolved into a community-based tourism model, managed by the locals themselves, providing supplementary income and improving the overall quality of life. Key livelihoods that reflect the community's way of life include the production of curry paste by the Baan Laem Curry Paste Group and the crafting of products from fishing nets by the Baan Bang Tong Net Weaving Group. These crafts are rare and rank among the leading producers in Thailand. Visitors can also purchase fresh seafood from local markets and experience the fishing lifestyle firsthand, such as setting crab or fish traps, through the services offered by Baan Laem Homestay. The lifestyle of the Baan Laem community is simple, friendly, and rooted in the principle of sufficiency. This way of life, passed down from ancestors to the younger generations, is a rare and precious example of sustainable living in today’s fast-paced world.
